An Kindness of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Man I Had Just Met Helped Me Secure the Job That Changed My Life

In the final years of the 1980s, I was beginning a low-cost journey to Europe with a friend. Since my travel mate was interested in starting a postgraduate program in NYC, we had arranged a fortnight visit there before heading to London.

We reached the postgrad residence, a big multi-story edifice on the UWS known as International House. Setting down our luggage, we went directly to the dining hall, where we picked up meals, sat down, and engaged in conversation with other diners.

Beside me was an Iraqi man studying engineering at an Ivy League institution. He inquired what I did, and I explained that I had recently completed my studies with a science degree and had been performing experiments using an electron microscope.

He pointed out that there was an electron microscope unit at Columbia University – right next door to the engineering faculty, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He suggested that I consider applying for a position with them. I dismissed the idea, telling him that I was heading off to Europe and, additionally, I lacked a US visa.

A day later I ventured out, going back to the cafeteria that night. The engineering student approached me and told me that he had arranged an interview for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Since he had made the arrangement, I showed up for the discussion – but straight off explained to my interviewer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a place where anything feels possible – she responded: “We can make that happen. What's your start date?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I worked there for a trio of years. An advantage of the role was that I got complimentary education at Columbia, and I seized the chance to earn a graduate degree in global studies.

I lost touch with him and I can't recall his name, but his incredible act of kindness transformed my future in so many ways. I would never have had the bravery or nerve to reach out at an prestigious college and seek a position. And, I had always wanted to pursue education overseas, but lacked the financial means without that educational benefit.

What's more, that role at the university paved the way for a job in Zurich where I got to know my handsome spouse from France, with whom I currently share four amazing children. It was a total sliding doors moment. That helpful person changed my trajectory in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
