European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
