Federal Reserve Cuts Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year during financial volatility stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed usually studies BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the number of employment gains created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.

The figure of jobs added to the market in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Show Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its release once the closure began. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, which he had earlier attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are going up, albeit slowly. Prices rose three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
