New research suggests that people who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People using these medications need to be informed of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a return to starting mass within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Approaches
The research, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Experts propose the way of the jabs accounts for the accelerated regain.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
People who have stopped the jabs report a intense resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a switch that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," said one woman.
This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among females than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, experts emphasize that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss relies on combined lifestyle support.
