Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

Australia's selection chief George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's Ashes series.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches kicking off on the 21st of November in the WACA.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about his chances of being involved.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and various factors at play, not just the back issue, but further aspects," he commented.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a major part. Ideally starting in Perth. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with setbacks in multiple past seasons causing him to miss several home seasons in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the series.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the opening match as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the starting games anyway. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
