The Iconic Game Turns 20 – The Plastic Guitar That Connected the Gap Among Music Fans

It has been two decades since the legendary game debuted in North America, giving everyday gamers the tools to become a rock star. Not literally, though you'd be hard-pressed convincing someone who has mastered Free Bird’s lengthy instrumental break before a packed crowd of friends.

Developed by the developers, the game provided users with a plastic guitar peripheral to follow on-screen cues scrolling down the display synchronized to the music. Each riff corresponded to specific notes, producing the sensation of a genuine live show.

Harmonix had already experimented with rhythm games prior to teaming up with RedOctane, later purchased by Activision during the mid-2000s. Together, they laid the groundwork for a surprising billion-dollar series which made a significant impact on numerous of the artists included, showcasing classic bands to millions of younger players.

A former executive, ex-chief operating officer from the developer, remembers the early budgetary hurdles of licensing the songs – despite the fact initial releases primarily featured cover versions.

“We reproduced every song because the dollar figure was so high,” he explains. “Despite having the publishing rights by themselves, it was nearly impossible. We failed to secure bands like legendary groups – the publisher was operating on a shoestring budget, and our team was pretty convinced it would fail. However, when Guitar Hero became a hit, album purchases airtime increased, everyone wanted to participate.”

He adds: “Among the amazing things was how many mothers and fathers got in touch and thanked us for introducing their children to the music they adored. It became an intergenerational thing.”

Timeless Music Gains Younger Fans

Irish group one featured act had their track in the 2008 release the popular installment. Guitarist the artist recalls the way the game revived classic rock back into vogue: “Guitar Hero offered a larger, younger audience. Typically this had been seen as outdated material, however when it was featured on the title and teenagers were finding it, suddenly it became trendy. This validated the genre, eliminating the outdated tag. It gave our catalog renewed popularity.”

At that time, the Answer’s debut album was still not available stateside, meaning Guitar Hero was a key medium of discovery for the band during their US tour opening for the rock giants. “Their crew had on the song on the tour bus, and some of them knew us from Guitar Hero,” Mahon says.

Major Band Spin-offs and Lasting Impact

Music's heavyweight names soon took advantage of the game's success, with Aerosmith, Metallica and Van Halen featuring in specialized spin-off titles that focused on their music collections and related lore, imagery and legendary status. For example, the Aerosmith edition, reportedly to have made the band more money than any of their studio albums. It moved well over 500,000 copies upon release, and demand for Aerosmith’s music rose of up to 40% at a time when the music business faced decline.

The series still motivates quick-handed dedication within the community. Recently, a streamer achieved a remarkable feat featuring Through the Fire and Flames – a notoriously difficult power-metal song made popular by Guitar Hero – using a fan-made version, a no-cost alternative with similar mechanics and extensive customisation options. The song is difficult even in the hardest setting, let alone performed at double speed and without missing every one of its near 4,000 notes. They claimed requiring nine months to accomplish.

“The game offers a, fantasy thing. If you play other games, it doesn't imply you ought to use actual weapons and enlist,” says DragonForce guitarist the artist.

The band previously completed a successful tour before their hit was featured in the third game, but Li says it turned them into a household name. “I remember the record label calling to tell me that we were records were moving like crazy,” he says. “It exploded on the subsequent tour, and we were playing just before the headliners on the Mayhem festival.”

Indeed, DragonForce’s exposure from Guitar Hero proved so vast that it has threatened to eclipsing all other accomplishments. Recently, the track was used in a trailer for Despicable Me 4. “Previously I thought differently, but I’ve made peace with it,” Li says. “Should you just listen to a single track, that's fine – everyone’s got their own path in music and I'm pleased we played a role in fans' experiences”.

Enduring Legacy of a Iconic Controller

Top-tier promotion, be it for cars, apparel or video games, extends beyond than selling something – it inspires a longing. Was the game able to harness this? “That’s exactly what our team trying to create,” Dornbrook says. “That thrill of performing as a rock star on the stage. From day one, the creators felt that humans have a natural urge to make music, and their goal was to use technology to allow people to participate”.

Most installments were released in just a half-decade from 2005 to 2010, including derivative titles such as the DJ version, complete with a spinning deck, and Band Hero. Subsequently, the publisher’s interest on peripherals died down, aside from a short-lived revival in 2015.

Titles such as the fan project and Fortnite Festival have kept the community active, with set to be something from the original publisher on the way. A new studio has begun production on their first rhythm-based title. The initial creators are both involved as special advisers. Are gamers ready to embrace a new entry in the spirit of the classic?

“We thought those games could be like Madden allowing annual releases,” Dornbrook says. “With abundant new music it could remain perennially popular, so I’ve always been hopeful. It's entirely possible why it can’t continue for future fans.”
