The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

Each time a prominent awards ceremony draws close, there’s always a demand for introducing additional classifications to recognize overlooked contributions and delight the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.

Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. The same goes for tabletop games, this being someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of video games, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories successfully include numerous genres, and you can find room for most games within them.

Not so for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Think about these recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: building puzzles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
  • A different innovative game missed out in 2019
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment that year
  • Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent modest productions, however the design behind logic titles is of massive significance. Well-known matching games count as most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges popular creative games claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers operate at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait decades.
